“Ambition Forges the National Soul”. Businesspeople, while engaged in commerce, are not solely focused on business; they also possess a sense of national identity and patriotism, which can be found throughout the Shanxi merchant community. This story shares the "national sentiment" aspect of the Shanxi merchants' spirit of serving the country and the people, leading us to understand the strong "national sentiment" of the Shanxi merchant group.
Qu Benqiao, born during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, was an outstanding figure in Qixian County, Shanxi, and even in modern Chinese history. In 1905 (the 31st year of Guangxu's reign), Shanxi merchants launched a vigorous movement to reclaim the coal mining rights in Yangquan and Lu'an, which had been sold by the Qing government to the British merchant company, Fuk Company. Qu Benqiao actively advocated and appealed, uniting all sectors of society and assisting the Shanxi provincial government in negotiating with the British Fuk Company. After several rounds of negotiations and intense struggles, an agreement was reached to raise funds to redeem the mining rights. In the process of redeeming the mining rights, Qu Benqiao was the first to donate funds and personally approached various banks to raise funds, eventually raising two million taels of silver and redeeming the mining rights. He then established the Baojin Mining Co., Ltd. in Yangquan and served as its first general manager. Qu Benqiao's patriotic deeds left a strong mark on history.
The success of Shanxi merchants during the Qing Dynasty was largely due to their philosophy of "serving the country and people," a spirit that permeated their entire commercial system from its inception. The spirit and culture of Shanxi merchants are the soul of Shanxi merchants.
