The "Bao Pu Zi - Shen Ju" states: "Therefore, by reading the Hong Fan, one knows that Jizi possessed the ability to govern the world, and by reading the Jiu Shu, one sees that Fan Sheng had the strategy to govern the country." Shanxi merchants inherited the style of ancient sages, "a succession of training, showing the spirit of perfect skill." Shanxi merchants absorbed the Confucian thought of "benevolence loves people," always happy to help the poor people, using their wealth to benefit the world. This issue shares a story from the "benefiting the world and saving the people" chapter of the Shanxi merchant spirit, leading everyone to understand the sincere "benevolence and charity" deeds of the Shanxi merchant group.
In 1887 AD, the third year of Guangxu's reign in Chinese history, Shanxi Province suffered the most severe drought in three hundred years, with grain shortages everywhere. The disaster lasted for three years. According to official Qing government documents, at that time nearly one-third of the population of Shanxi died in this disaster. During the famine, the Chang family's trade also suffered huge losses. People and livestock died of hunger, making it impossible to organize large transportation teams, and the trade volume was only 4% of normal years, and they also had to bear the compensation for breach of contract. Despite the losses to their own business, the Chang family still set up sheds and meals for the disaster victims, but some people could not put down their pride and were unwilling to accept long-term relief and eat at the porridge shed. In order for everyone to receive assistance with dignity, the Chang family came up with the idea of building a theater to help their neighbors, stipulating that moving a brick would provide one day's worth of food. Therefore, the major disaster lasted for more than three years, and the Chang family's theater was also built for three years.
The Li family of Yanjing Village, Wanquan County (now part of Wanrong County), a Shanxi merchant, did good deeds everywhere, and people in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan, Gansu, and Ningxia provinces called them "Li the Benevolent." The Li family became wealthy and took the initiative to assume social responsibility, carrying out a series of public welfare activities such as building ponds, roads, schools, and nurseries, improving the local people's production and living conditions. In years of famine, the Li family bought food and set up many porridge sheds to help the poor. In 1928, there was a major drought in southern Shanxi, and the Li family provided relief to more than a dozen counties in Hedong, 1,000 silver dollars per county. The Li family set up porridge fields in Xuedian Village, Yanjing Village, and the Chishen Temple in Yuncheng for a year. County magistrates in Hedong requested the government to commend the Li family's good deeds.
Disaster relief, but this is not merely charity, but rather a responsible form of assistance. There are many similar charitable acts by families like the Li and Chang families among Shanxi merchants. Acts for the people, filled with affection. By exploring the connotation of "benefiting the world and saving the people" in the spirit of Shanxi merchants, we promote the original intention of "serving the people" in the integrity culture to move steadily forward.
